what is the difference between a workstation computer and a pc?

I ask because in looking for parts for my computer and I was looking for a good video card around $ 500 or so installed and get the results of the graphics workstation. I need that computer software for smooth video during construction, and others. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I want to design games based on the computer, what should I do graphics. Im always Sandy Bridge 2600K Intel Quad-Core CPU and motherboard, Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD5 LGA 1155 Intel P67 SATA 6 Gb / s USB 3.0 ATX motherboard suggestions?
